Preacher off to a Sinsational start!
By now most people have seen the majestic piece of television brought to AMC in the form of Preacher. If you haven’t seen it, I suggest you flip the channel on your DVR or go to AMC and watch it there. It was magic, pure and utter magic. For those that might not be aware, Preacher is a Vertigo series published by DC Comics that ran for a total of 66 issues in 1995 written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Steve Dillion. The show was brought to AMC by Seth Rogen of all people. Yes, the same Seth Rogen that brought you Superbad and Pineapple Express. The story follows Jesse Custer in a small Texas town. One night in his church Jesse began to pray, and well….you just have to see for yourself. No Spoilers here.
This is the beginning of a dark twisted ride that will hopefully have a lasting impact on AMC. The overall tone of the show is not for the faint at heart. If you were looking for a touching moment of clarity, you should probably look elsewhere. Preacher looks to be a promising dark ride of terror and horror. We get small allusions to Jesse’s past, but are not certain. One thing is for sure, with this single episode we find out that our Preacher is a lot more than he seems.
Very quickly the shows gives us a quick glimpse of the cast. Two introductions were amazing to me. Cassidy has an incredible action sequence to set him up. Exactly how he is going to fit into the series is still being fleshing out, but I have a feeling that it won’t suck. We are also treated to Tulip. When we meet Tulip the viewer is not sure at all what to make of her. All we know so far is that she can definitely hold her own, and is very resourceful. The show does a good job of giving you pieces of these characters without losing the focus on our main character. The pacing is excellent, and there are plenty of surprises in store in this pilot episode. Watching Dominic Cooper transform from the suave Howard Stark into the bad ass Preacher Jesse Custer really shows the range of talent that he has.
AMC really has a diamond in the rough here. The hype has been on point, and from the way the pilot episode started, it looks like we have barely scratched the surface. Don’t worry about wearing your Sunday best for this show, because it is going to get very messy. From the looks of things, it is going to happen really fast too. So dust off your sins, and get ready to confess, because Preacher is going to give you a sermon whether you like it or not.
